System Context

Trust supports relationships, decisions, transactions, institutions, organizations, and everyday cooperation.

In many situations, trust may begin before complete evidence is available.

People may rely on reputation, relationships, experience, expertise, authority, previous behavior, or social standing.

As systems become larger, more complex, more distributed, and more dependent on information, personal familiarity may no longer be sufficient.

Records, documentation, traceability, independent verification, and observable evidence may become increasingly important.

Verification does not automatically replace trust.

It provides a structured way to examine claims, reduce uncertainty, connect actions with outcomes, and update confidence when new evidence appears.

1. Claim

Someone makes a statement, promise, representation, commitment, or assertion.

A claim may concern:

  • Ownership.
  • Quality.
  • Compliance.
  • Responsibility.
  • Expected action.

A claim communicates what someone says is true or what they intend to do.

The claim alone may not show whether the statement can be independently confirmed.


2. Evidence

Evidence is provided to support the claim.

Evidence may include:

  • Data.
  • Documents.
  • Records.
  • Transactions.
  • Images.
  • Measurements.
  • Certificates.
  • Observable outcomes.

The existence of evidence does not automatically establish that the claim is fully supported.

The evidence may still require examination.


3. Verification

Verification involves checking, testing, comparing, or validating the available evidence.

This may involve:

  • Confirming the source.
  • Checking dates and context.
  • Comparing records.

4. Confidence

Verification may increase confidence when the available evidence supports the claim.

It may reduce confidence when:

Confidence does not need to become absolute.

7. New Evidence

Results, feedback, performance, behavior, and outcomes create new evidence about what actually happened.

New evidence may:

  • Show partial performance.
  • Identify new uncertainty.

This evidence becomes part of the next trust evaluation.


8. Trust Updates

Trust may increase, decrease, or stabilize based on updated evidence.

These factors may provide useful context.

However, they remain different from independently verifiable evidence about a specific claim.


Over Time, Systems Rely More on Verification

As complexity increases, the need for structured verification may also increase.

Records

Records create a traceable history of claims, actions, decisions, and outcomes.

Documentation

Documentation provides clarity, context, reference, and continuity.

Traceability

Traceability connects evidence, actions, decisions, and outcomes across time.

Independent Verification

Independent review may introduce additional objectivity and reduce dependence on a single source.

Observable Evidence

Observable evidence makes a claim more open to examination, comparison, and testing.


When Verification Is Missing or Weak

Uncertainty Remains

Questions may remain unresolved when supporting evidence is unavailable, incomplete, inaccessible, or difficult to test.

Decisions may require more caution, time, or additional checking.

Trust Becomes Fragile
