Purpose

The Continuity Equation is a conceptual formula created to illustrate how consistency, evidence, and governance may strengthen the ability of a system to continue operating over time.

The formula also demonstrates how disruption, neglect, complacency, and unavoidable uncertainty may weaken continuity or cause it to decline.

Conceptual Equation

Ct = [(Con × Evi × Gov) / (Dis + Neg + Com)] + ε

Continuity = (Consistency × Evidence × Governance) / (Disruption + Neglect + Complacency) + Epsilon


Variables

Ct — Continuity

The conceptual ability of a system to sustain operations, preserve essential functions, and remain structurally connected across time.

Con — Consistency

The repeated practice of performing the right activities through reliable and structured processes.

Evi — Evidence

Verifiable proof showing that actions, events, records, or operational conditions occurred.

Gov — Governance

Rules, systems, responsibilities, controls, and accountability structures that support reliable operation.

Dis — Disruption

Unexpected shocks, interruptions, or changing conditions that break or weaken normal system flow.

Neg — Neglect

The failure to address conditions, responsibilities, maintenance needs, or observable warning signs requiring attention.

Com — Complacency

The assumption that a system will remain stable without continued observation, verification, maintenance, or improvement.

ε — Epsilon

A conceptual term representing uncertainty and unpredictable conditions that cannot be completely removed from a system.
