Taxonomy remains one of the most important yet least visible capabilities supporting modern civilization.
Infrastructure depends on taxonomy.
Organizations depend on taxonomy.
Institutions depend on taxonomy.
Civilization depends on systems capable of classifying information into consistent structures so that knowledge can be organized, navigated, and understood.
Many observers focus on categories, folders, classifications, or organizational charts.
The discussion frequently centers on the information being classified.
The structural capability allowing information to become systematically organized across large and complex collections receives less attention.
While reviewing developments across infrastructure, governance, healthcare, finance, logistics, manufacturing, scientific research, public administration, cultural institutions, archives, and digital systems, I found myself paying less attention to individual categories and more attention to the taxonomy systems enabling information to become organized knowledge.
