Diagnostics remains one of the most important yet least visible capabilities supporting modern civilization.
Infrastructure depends on diagnostics.
Organizations depend on diagnostics.
Institutions depend on diagnostics.
Civilization depends on systems capable of examining system conditions so that abnormalities, irregularities, and deviations can become identifiable and improve understanding of system behavior.
Many observers focus on troubleshooting, faults, symptoms, errors, tests, or corrective activity.
The discussion frequently centers on fixing what appears to be wrong.
The structural capability allowing system conditions to be examined before causes or responses are determined receives less attention.
While reviewing developments across infrastructure, governance, healthcare, finance, logistics, manufacturing, scientific research, public administration, engineering, transportation, communication networks, and digital systems, I found myself paying less attention to individual troubleshooting activities and more attention to the diagnostic systems enabling system conditions and abnormalities to become understandable.
